A University don, Professor Emmanuel Ola Oshomoh, has described Science Laboratory Scientists as silent architects and innovators within the health sector. He made this claim at the University of Medical Sciences (UNIMED) 1st Induction Ceremony into the Science Laboratory Technology Profession held on Tuesday, 18th November, 2025 at the Odosida Campus of the institution.
Speaking on the topic “Science Laboratory Scientists: 'Silent Architects of Health, Innovations, Entrepreneurship and National Advancement”, the Professor of Phytomedicine/Biotechnology and Natural Product Discovery from the University of Benin said, “A science laboratory scientist is a professional who conducts experiments, tests, and analyzes data in a laboratory setting. He is a detective of the scientific world. He uncovers the secrets of the universe.” Oshomoh went further to describe science laboratory scientists as ‘silent architects’, given the crucial roles they play within the health sector. In his words, he said, “Science laboratories and the scientists working within them act as essential 'silent architects' by performing crucial behind-the-scenes work that supports public health, drives innovation, fosters entrepreneurship, and contributes significantly to national advancement and development of the Nation and the world.
Oshomoh further underscored how important the discipline is within the health sector by describing Science Laboratory Technology as a multidisciplinary field that uses various tools such as biotechnology that combines biology, technology, and engineering “to develop innovative products and solutions that improve human life and the environment.”
In his welcome address, the Head of Department of UNIMED’s Science Laboratory Technology Department (SLT), Dr. Abraham Aladebeye, also depicted Science Laboratory Scientists as “silent architects” by saying, “While others speak loudly about science, we produce the evidence. While many celebrate innovation, we are the ones who test, validate, and give those innovations credibility. While society applauds breakthroughs, we are the hands that built them, one experiment, one dataset, one quality check at a time.”
The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ebunoluwa Adejuyigbe, represented at the event by Professor Abdulazeez Abubakar, congratulated the newly inducted SLT professionals on the feat of being the first set to be inducted by the University and urged them to use their knowledge to impact the health sector positively. “This feat is remarkable, being the first set of SLT professionals to be inducted by UNIMED. I congratulate you. Do not rest on your oars as you have the world at your feet. Use your knowledge to impact the health sector positively”, the vice-chancellor said.
The highlight of the event was the administration of oath and presentation of licenses to the inductees by the Acting DG/Registrar of the Nigerian Institute of Science Laboratory Technology (NISLT), Dr. Peter Adefisoye Oluwafisoye.
