Welcome Page

Dear students:

You are welcome to the Department of Oral/Maxillofacial Pathology, Radiology and Oral Medicine of the Faculty of Dental Science at Nigeria premier medical university - UNIMED, Ondo City.

Our Department is responsible for the teaching of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology, Oral Radiology, and Oral Medicine and coordinates the education of Oral Biology to Dental students.

The Department of Oral/Maxillofacial Pathology, Radiology and Oral Medicine presents the fundamental basis of dental sciences to students for them to comprehend the structure and functions of the oral and maxillofacial tissues in health and diseased states. Introduction to the microscopic diagnosis of oral and maxillofacial pathologies are also part of the clinical skills acquired in the undergraduate program of the Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) degree.

Classroom instructions are carried out in a serene environment using audiovisuals aids and PowerPoint presentation slides. Group discussions and seminars are also encouraged for active learning. I warmly welcome you to our Department.

6.   The knowledge of fundamental techniques and methodology of research in health sciences.

B.        Courses offered and description of courses

Oral Biology deals with the origin, growth and development, structure and functions of Oral and Maxillofacial tissues. It includes the subjects of dental anatomy, which teaches human tooth structures, detailing its embryology, histology, gross anatomy, coupled with oral physiology.

This forms the basis of the dental training, as it teaches the normal structures and functions of the Oral and Maxillofacial structures, hence enabling the students to be able to recognize deviations from normal as seen in pathologic conditions.

Oral Pathology teaches the study and research of the causes, effects, and diagnosis of diseases affecting the Oral and Maxillofacial region. It is the foundation for clinical, laboratory and microscopic diagnosis of Oral and Maxillofacial diseases as related to other areas of medical and dental sciences.

Oral Radiology is concerned with performance and interpretation of diagnostic imaging used for examining the craniofacial, dental and adjacent structures.

Oral Medicine is concerned with the clinical diagnosis and non-surgical management of non-dental pathologies affecting the orofacial region
