The University of Medical Sciences (UNIMED), Ondo, on Saturday, 15th November, 2025, inducted 72 doctors into the medical and dental professions at the main auditorium, Odosida campus of the institution.
The Guest Lecturer, Prof. Frank Imarhiagbe of University of Benin, Nigeria, who spoke on the topic “The Medical Graduate in Contemporary Nigeria: Navigating the Career Path to the Top” said “Modern or allopathic medicine is a noble profession that is strictly regulated by ethics with good medical practice as the under guard”. To this end, he said “Navigating career paths to the top or specialist and sub-specialist positions may be tedious but not insurmountable.” He then admonished the newly inducted medical and dental practitioners not to allow pitfalls such as “some specialties are better and more attractive than others”, “the residency programme is tough and tedious and as such it is advisable to take some time to rest after the MBBS training before embarking on it”, among others to discourage them from giving the practice their all.
Imarhiagbe went on to say that to succeed in medical practice, hard work, counselling and guidance are crucial. “With industry and proper counselling and guidance from seniors there should be no discouragement about reaching the top of your career”, he said. He added that “Life-long learning is the mantra of medical practice”.
Speaking at the event, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ebunoluwa Adejuyigbe charged the newly inducted doctors to uphold the ethics of the profession and make humanity the centrepiece of their practice. "While I congratulate you for this feat, I must not fail to admonish you to uphold the ethics of the medical and dental professions as well as making humanity the core of your practice. A simple mistake can lead to litigation which may mar your progression in the practice. You must remain careful at all times not to jeopardise your career", she said.
The Chief Medical Director of the University of Medical Sciences Teaching Hospital (UNIMEDTH), Dr Michael Gbala, who also counselled the new doctors to be steadfast in their practice, pledged to give the new doctors immediate employments, if they are willing to take the offers.. He added that the Governor of Ondo State, Hon. Dr Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa has just approved procurement of state-of-the-art facilities such as MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) scan forUNIMEDTH. This, he said, would improve healthcare delivery at the teaching hospital. In his words, "we don't want to continue to export our medical doctors, which are in high demand abroad. Rather, we want to retain them to improve our healthcare delivery. To this end, we are ready to employ all of you, if you are willing to stay". He continued by saying, "in a short while, UNIMEDTH will be bolstered with state-of-the-art facilities such as MRI scan machine, which will make medical practice and Healthcare delivery more effective".
