Welcome to the Department of Prosthetics and Orthotics, Faculty of Medical Rehabilitation, University of Medical Sciences, Ondo city, Ondo State, Nigeria. You may like to ask what is Prosthetics and Orthotics?
PROSTHETICS is the study and practice of human limb replacement following congenital malformation or amputation of limb. The technological devices produced for human ambulation are called prostheses while the professional skilled and knowledgeable in Prosthetics is called Prosthetist.
ORTHOTICS on the other hand, is the branch of medicine concerned with the study and practice of design, fabrication and application of external supports on human body following neuromuscular and skeletal impairments. The supports or devices are called orthoses while the professional skilled and knowledgeable in orthotics is called Orthotics. There is a lot of similarity in the core courses of Prosthetics and Orthotics hence the two courses are often taken as one with opportunities to specialize in either Prosthetics or Orthotics or their sub-specialities. Materials such as wood, metals, leather, plaster of Paris, plastics, resins and adhesives are used to construct prostheses and orthoses.
