Welcome !
The Olu Akinkugbe Faculty of Pharmacy (OAFoP) was approved by the Senate of the University on 7th October 2021. The University Senate and Governing Council have named the faculty “Olu Akinkugbe Faculty of Pharmacy” as a testament to and recognition of, Chief Oludolapo Akinkugbe’s outstanding contributions to the pharmacy profession and industry spanning more than seven decades.
Chief Oludolapo Akinkugbe is an illustrious son of Ondo, a renowned pharmacist, the 4th President of the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria, a foremost industrialist of many parts, a seasoned board room guru and a philanthropist in whose honour a trust, the Olu Akinkugbe Pharmacy Education Trust (OAPET), was set up with Prince Julius Adelusi-Adeluyi as Chairman. The Trust is facilitating the establishment of the Faculty of Pharmacy in the University of Medical Sciences (UNIMED) Ondo City, Ondo State through provision of state-of-the-art infrastructure.
The Olu Akinkugbe Faculty of Pharmacy has designed its Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm. D) programme to produce well educated and competent pharmacists in compliance with the Core Curriculum and Minimum Academic Standards (CCMAS) of the National Universities Commission (NUC), for Nigerian universities offering the Pharmacy course. The Faculty’s approach to pharmacy education is unique as it departs largely from traditional didactic lectures and adopts the interactive mode of teaching in which the lecturer serves as a teacher, a guide and a pathfinder during students’ interactions.
The principal objective of the Curriculum is to provide for the education, development and training of qualified students for careers in pharmacy practice in an integrated environment with other members of the healthcare team. Since none of the Departments in the Faculty awards separate degrees, a single structuring for all departments is the ultimate goal so as to fully integrate all materials, consequently, some courses are designated as PCY and involves all relevant departments in its delivery but will be based in specific departments for administrative purposes.
The Curriculum has been structured to produce pharmacists with clinical, industrial, academic, entrepreneurial and leadership skills required for a dynamic and fruitful professional and service.
Prof. Ogundaini Abiodun Oguntuga (B. Pharm ,M. Phil.,PhD)
Objectives of the Faculty
The philosophy of the Pharmacy programme is to produce competent graduates worthy in character, providing high quality services and striving for excellence in the practice of pharmacy to achieve optimal patient outcomes.
Consequently, the objectives of the degree programme are to:
i. Instill in the students a sense of appreciation of the pharmacy profession and to involve them in an intellectually stimulating and satisfying experience of learning and study.
ii. Develop students who demonstrate proficiency in the knowledge, skills and attitudes of basic and applied pharmaceutical sciences.
iii. Produce graduates who are capable of independent, analytical thinking and problem-solving with respect to drugs and drug-related problems both in human and animals.
iv. Provide students with the ability to communicate effectively with patients and caregivers, thereby promoting healthcare and optimal use of drugs.
v. Empower the graduates with adequate knowledge and skills to function confidently as integral members of the multidisciplinary healthcare team.
vi. Produce graduates who will function in a manner consistent with professional and ethical standards of practice in the country.
vii. Provide students with adequate knowledge in manufacture, drug quality and distribution of quality pharmaceutical products.
viii. Produce graduates empowered with leadership and management skills.
ix. Instill in the students the dynamic value of the profession, which makes life-long learning a necessity.
x. Provide students with adequate knowledge and appropriate skill base from which they can proceed for further studies in specialized areas of Pharmacy.
