I heartily welcome you to the Institute of community health Innovation and Development (ICHIAD). The ICHIAD is a flagship institute of the University of Medical Sciences. It was established with three clear mandates of teaching and training, research and community services. This is in line with the overall vision of the university of medical sciences, which is to be a thriving medical and health Sciences University; locally, nationally and internationally recognized for excellence and innovation in health education and research and for ability to translate research findings for the improvement of health in communities with high burden of diseases. Hence, the ICHIAD provides a platform that contributes to the achievement of the laudable vision of the university.

The teaching and training engagements of the ICHIAD consist of the Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) degree program in Community Health Science (CHS) and short course capacity building seminars, workshops and conferences for community and public health practitioners and stakeholders of the health sector. The B.Sc. in CHS programme seeks to produce highly motivated graduates of high academic standing with adequate community and public health exposure who can function adequately in the medical education process, the community and primary health care systems; and with a broad-based academic professional training and competence that reflect the emphasis on the current national preventive health care systems and services.

The research and community health services activities of the Institute seeks to deliver high-quality, evidence- and community-based primary health care / health -for-all services to community groups with a view to reducing the health burdens of communicable and non-communicable diseases in the communities of our operations.

Our team of iconic, seasoned and resourceful teaching and research staff, a comprehensive B.Sc. community health curriculum and a standard public health laboratory are some of the resources and facilities at UNIMED waiting for you to explore, towards achieving your goal in the university.

In my position as the Acting Director of ICHIAD, I have found the attitudes and behaviors of our students quite encouraging. Our students have largely demonstrated a good sense of decency, diligenceand discipline in their conduct and behaviors. These qualities are required to maximally harness and optimize the opportunities provided at UNIMED.

Also, the field experiences from our community interventions in the past few years of our operations and the successes being recorded in spite of the challenges speaks to the possibility of achieving the mandates of the Institute, and of achieving a truly sustainable, evidence- and community-based primary health care / health for-all services at the community level.

Once again, I welcome you to the ICHIAD and wish you a very fruitful interface with us and in your sojourn in the University.

Sincerely,

Dr. Osunmakinwa, Olugbenga Olusegun
