INTRODUCTION

The Department of Haematology and Immunology is one of the foundational departments in the Faculty of Basic Clinical Sciences in the University. Its responsibilities are mainly teaching/training research and laboratory work. The department trains medical/dental student to acquire appropriate/adequate knowledge and develop basic skills in laboratory medicine.

The department educates the undergraduate students on the functions of blood and blood forming organs, the clinical and laboratory aspects of disorders of these organs, the treatment of such disorders, the use of the blood component transfusion therapy, immune system and its disorders. Students are also required to gain sufficient practical knowledge of the disorders of the blood, both in the routine haematology laboratory and in the blood bank.

The undergraduate program is part of the MBBS curriculum in the training of medical/dental doctors. The department trains 400 Level medical/dental students in Haematology and Immunology for a one (1) year period. Students who are successful at the ensuing part II exams will proceed to the Clinical specialties

The department greatest assets are the skills and expertise of the Academic Staff and strong Clinical focus of our programs. Our   programs offer students opportunities for study with Academic Staff who are nationally recognized in their expertise, especially during case review session and practical demonstration session. Every member of staff holds a certificate of the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria (NPMCN) and/or from the West Africa College of Physician (WACP).The Academic Staff are actively involved in Clinical Sciences and research.

OBJECTIVES
