It is with great pleasure that I welcome you to the website of the Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences at the University of Medical Sciences (UNIMED), Ondo City, Nigeria. The Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences at UNIMED consists of the Departments of Anatomy, Biochemistry, and Physiology. These disciplines are concerned with the study of the healthy human body. The knowledge of these foundational sciences is essential for medical practice. Therefore, it is critical that health professional students be well-grounded in these basic sciences for them to have an in-depth understanding of the structure and function of the healthy human body. After that, they will be exposed to the study of diseases and finally to the study of diagnoses and treatment of disorder to ensure wellness.
The Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences at UNIMED was founded on April 22, 2015, with the vision of teaching medical/dental students, the basic medical sciences and allied health sciences students at undergraduate and postgraduate levels leading to the award of B.Sc., M.Sc., and Ph.D. degrees.
At the time, we were not only concerned with training students in the different professions at the undergraduate level, but we also planned to train scientists in Anatomy, Biochemistry, and Physiology. We believe this holistic approach is the best.
Our Faculty workforce presently consists of passionate and visionary academic and non-academic staff, including adjunct lecturers on sabbatical leave from other institutions across the nation.
Our Departments of Anatomy, Biochemistry, and Physiology are fully accredited both by the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria and the National Universities Commission. We have conducted professional MBBS exams for three sets of medical and dental students, and our B.Sc. students are presently holding their final year research. Postgraduate training in Anatomy, Biochemistry, and Physiology is to start very soon. Again, welcome to the Faculty of the Basic Medical Sciences!
Sincerely,
Professor G.F. Ibironke, BSc., MSc., MBBS, MD (Ibadan)
Dean, Faculty of Basic Medical Science
