Science Laboratory Technology (SLT) in the University of Medical Sciences (UNIMED), Ondo is a multifaceted professional programme, designed to train and mentor students by providing them with a broad and balanced scientific foundation and enhanced practical skills that would make them stand out, among others, in entrepreneurship, job creation, wealth generation, and employability after graduation.
Running for five (5) academic sessions, the prospective students have options in Microbiology, Biology and Computational Biology, Biochemistry, Chemistry, Physics, and Mathematics Techniques from 200 level with the view to positioning them as potential buffers and catalysts to the quests for efficient research and development in Nigeria and globally.
Canonical compliance of the Department of Science Laboratory Technology, UNIMED to the Benchmark Minimum Academic Standards (BMAS) for undergraduate programmes in Nigerian Universities by National Universities Commission (NUC) leads to the award of Bachelor of Science (B.Sc) honours degree programme in Science Laboratory Technology.
During the course of the programme, our students do have a town-gown exposure through Industrial Training that spans for six (6) months at the second semester of 400 Level academic sessions. This student’s experience is monitored and assessed via site-work supervision, university supervision, and student’s report.
Before mobilization for National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), the Institution partners with the Nigerian Institute of Science Laboratory Technology (NISLT) to organize professional induction for the graduating students to become licensed professionals in their choice fields of Science Laboratory Technology.
Numerous job opportunities, as scientists or technologists, await the graduates of Science Laboratory Technology in petrochemical industries, pharmaceuticals, medical laboratories, food industries, paints industries, pulp and paper industries, textiles, research institutes, among others.
Philosophy
The Bachelor of Science (B.Sc) honours degree programme in Science Laboratory Technology in the University of Medical Sciences, Ondo is geared towards:
1. Management of institutional, industrial and research laboratories and workshops to meet the technological needs of Nigeria;
2. Designing, execution and coordination of science-based experiments and research in laboratories and workshops; and
3. Maintenance of stock of laboratory and workshop materials.

PhD (Analytical Chemistry), M.Tech (Analytical Chemistry), B.Sc (Industrial Chemistry), PGD (Industrial Chemistry), HND (Science Technology, Applied Chemistry Option), ND (Science Technology)
The programme is designed to provide a practical and theoretical training on tasks that are related to in-depth scientific analyses, which in their turn help to make new inventions and breakthroughs in the sphere they work, carrying out different experiments and researches.
The objectives of B.Sc in Science Laboratory Technology in the University of Medical Sciences, Ondo include:
1. To provide education relevant to the Nigerian needs in the field of Science and Technology with emphasis on practical skills and techniques;
2. To offer academic and professional programmes leading to the awards of B.Sc, M.Sc and Ph.D in Science Laboratory Technology without educational, ethnic, racial, gender or religious bias;
3. To produce professional scholars that will fill the deficient manpower in the fields of Science and Technology, thereby reducing unnecessary influx and preference for expatriates;
4. To produce professional scholars and managers of natural, economic and human resources for national and global unity;
5. To produce graduates with broad knowledge and practical based skills with ability to harness local contents for innovations and breakthroughs in research and development putting into consideration the quests for diversification of our natural resources;
6. To provide students with specialized training in technical and vocational skills to handle maintenance and minor repairs of equipment in the laboratories and workshops;
7. To act as troubleshooters to identified problems and needs of the society by making positive impacts through the manufacture of ‘functional products’;
To impregnate and birth entrepreneurial spirits in graduates of Science Laboratory Technology for creativity and innovation, self-employment, job creation, wealth generation within the context of overall national unity and development.
